Liver Lovers: Milk Thistle & Turmeric

While we don’t believe in fad detoxes or cleanses, we do believe in supporting the natural detoxification and cleansing processes that your liver works hard to do every single day! A couple of our favourite superstar ingredients for this are Milk Thistle and Turmeric, which are two of the main ingredients in the JSHealth Detox + Debloat formula. Let’s take a closer look...

A bit about the liver

The liver is a vital organ that plays a key role in many metabolic and physiological processes such as bile production, energy metabolism, vitamin storage and the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. It’s also responsible for carrying many toxic substances like alcohol and drugs, which is why the liver is so susceptible to toxicity and damage.

Which brings us to chat to you about the two main ingredients in the JSHealth Detox + Debloat formula, designed to support the natural detoxification processes of the liver.

Milk Thistle

Milk Thistle, also known as ‘Silybum Marianum’ is a herb famous for its liver-loving properties and has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for liver conditions! It’s also a major antioxidant, helping to block those nasty free radicals that can enter our body.

It has been traditionally used in western herbal medicine to protect the liver, and support cleansing and detoxification. Specifically, it has been used to treat fatty liver disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis and to protect the liver from environmental toxins. Essentially Milk Thistle forms a complex that blocks toxins entering the liver cells.

How does Milk Thistle work to protect the liver?
Through 3 main mechanisms:
1. It serves as an antioxidant
2. It contains anti-inflammatory properties
3. It’s anti-fibrotic (reduces formation of scar tissue)

Turmeric’s benefits can be attributed to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can assist to improve markers of stress and pain through scavenging different forms of toxins in the body.

Turmeric contains an active ingredient called curcumin, which gives it its bright yellow colour and is rich in antioxidants. We’re so passionate about this spice and its anti-inflammatory properties that we added it to our Detox + Debloat vitamin.

This delicious spice also helps to relieve digestive discomfort and relieves symptoms of gas and indigestion. It can also support our liver through reducing oxidative stress in the body.
