I Road-Tested Bon Charge’s LED Red Light Mask—Here’s What Happened to My Skin
With a long career as a beauty writer on my resumé, I’ll try almost anything in the name of good skin, but when it comes to LED red light therapy, I was particularly intrigued. The technology is backed by dermatologists, championed by skincare fanatics and used by leading clinics worldwide. Now, at-home red light masks are making it more accessible than ever. The promise? Stimulating collagen, reducing fine lines and evening out skin tone—all without downtime or invasive treatments.
So, in the name of research (and radiant skin), I committed to 12 weeks of road-testing the Bon Charge LED Red Light Therapy Mask to see whether it lived up to the hype. Here’s what happened.
Week 1: Understanding the Science
Before committing to any skincare technology, I like to understand exactly how it works. The Bon Charge Red Light Face Mask operates at specific wavelengths—optimally 630 nanometers (Red Light) and 850 nanometers (Near Infrared Light)—designed to penetrate the skin at varying depths. Red light at 630nm targets the outer layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production, reducing inflammation, and enhancing overall radiance. Near Infrared Light at 850nm reaches deeper into the skin, supporting cellular regeneration and accelerating the skin’s natural healing processes. This process, known as photobiomodulation, works at a mitochondrial level, providing cells with the energy they need to repair and rejuvenate.
Originally developed by NASA to speed up wound healing in astronauts, red light therapy is now widely used in dermatology for its ability to improve skin texture, elasticity and overall tone.
Armed with this knowledge, I committed to five sessions a week for 10 minutes using the Bon Charge LED mask. My routine? I kept it simple and used the 4-Step Vitamin Skincare System morning and night, which was already giving me great results.
Week 4: Early Signs of Change
By the one-month mark, I wasn’t expecting dramatic results—but I could see small yet promising shifts. My skin looked slightly brighter and more even-toned, with a noticeable reduction in post-breakout marks.
One thing I hadn’t considered? The way my skin felt. There was an increased smoothness and suppleness, particularly in the mornings. At this point, I had really dialled down my research and rituals to optimise my results.
My best tips are:
- Use it consistently – Most studies show visible results after 8–12 weeks of regular use (3–5 times per week for 10–20 minutes).
- Start with clean, dry skin – Apply on a makeup-free face to enhance light absorption.
- Choose a quality device – Investing in a well-designed LED mask ensures optimal wavelength delivery. Devices like the Bon Charge’s mask are engineered for effective, even light distribution, making it easy to incorporate this treatment into your routine.
- Pair it with targeted skincare – For the best results, use red light therapy alongside a high-performance topical routine (such as the age-defying 4-Step Vitamin Skincare System) to enhance skin health.
- Support from within – A collagen supplement can complement your topical routine by providing the building blocks for skin elasticity and hydration. A 3g daily serve of Pure Marine Collagen is so easy, or I also love the Greens + Collagen—so delish!
-
Be patient. Results are cumulative. Consistency is key!
Week 8: Firmer, Smoother, Stronger
By week eight, the changes were undeniable. My skin felt firmer, as though it had more ‘bounce’, and dehydration lines were less noticeable.
There’s a reason for this: a study published in the Journal of Photomedicine and Laser Surgery found that 91% of participants saw improvements in skin tone, texture and fine lines after 12 weeks of red light therapy (Barolet and Boucher, 2018).
Week 12: The Verdict
After three months of consistent use, I can confidently say red light therapy (and a religious science-backed skincare regime) delivers. My complexion is visibly smoother, with a more refined texture and overall radiance. Fine lines? Still there, but far less pronounced. There’s a strength and resilience to my skin now that wasn’t as noticeable before.
Would I recommend the Bon Charge LED Red Light Mask? Absolutely. It’s a simple yet science-backed way to enhance skin health and it doesn’t require a major lifestyle shift. I habit-stacked, so I would pop it on while journaling or reading. Instant self-care uplevel, anyone?
If you’re considering trying red light therapy for yourself, my advice is this: Think of it as long-term skin investment. Pair it with a high-quality skincare routine, collagen support and a commitment to consistency, and your glowing results will be en route.
